Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
