A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
